Body Surfing

The World's Most Beautiful Beaches

Beach Activities

Body surfing consists of swimming or jumping along with an oncoming wave and arching your body back a little so that you are pushed along by the wave as it heads into shore.

Body surfing is very fun and inexpensive. It requires only you and the incoming waves.

What size wave is required to make body surfing work? It depends on your size and the speed with which you can come up to speed with the forward edge of the wave.

Like surfing, or body boarding, unless you coordinate the wave and yourself, you will think that body surfing just won't work for you. But if you practice a little, you'll find that it is natural and like riding a bicycle.

Be sure to let others know where you are.

Watch out for riptides and rough surf since you want to play it safe.

Since body surfing depends on waves and since waves don't always come in straight to the shore, but an angle, be prepared to keep moving back up the beach to where you started, especially if you have friends and possessions on the beach.

Be careful of others since you don't want to run into someone else or to make them think that you may have almost run into them.

There is always the very good chance that the wave that you had planned to carry you in will instead roll you end over end. Although this can be fun many times, sometimes it catches you totally off guard.

Parents and guardians: body surfing can be very fun for the younger ones, even close to the shore with the smaller and milder waves. But whatever the age, please be aware of where everyone is in the water, especially when playing in the waves.
