Shell hunting can be easily enjoyed by the novice, the casual beach walker, the one looking for pretty things washing up on the beach, an individual, the entire family, and almost everyone else. Shells are usually washed up and exposed by wave action. But the same wave action that washed the shell up on the shore may have also been pushing the shell along for quite some time and slowly sanding away any spines, fine detail, and more. Many shells can also be found while snorkeling or scuba diving. These shells may have had less history of having been rolled around in a rough surf and thus may be more likely to be in better condition. You need to be aware that there still may be sealife in shells that you find. The creatures inside may be interesting but they can be dangerous as well. It is illegal in some areas to take any shells where there may still be living creatures inside. Top 10 Shelling Beaches provides an article on ten beaches which can provide quite a selection of shells.
