The National Healthy Beaches Campaign (NHVC) rates beaches on their health.

How do they decide the health? Parameters include how clean the beach is, whether the beach is over crowded or not, pollution of the water, erosion, and more.

Their mission states that they are "dedicated to creating a balance between the recreational use of our nation's beaches and maintaining the environmental quality and safety of this prized resource."

A major benefit of their site is that they provide ample links to the local websites which represent those beach areas so that you can more easily assess whether you would want to consider visiting there or not.
