Aruba is an island in the Caribbean and about 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Aruba has over 40 miles of coastline and it rains little. Aruba was discovered by Spain in 1499. The Dutch took over in 1636. The island of Aruba was once part of the Netherlands Antilles. It is autonomous from the Netherlands but is not fully independent. Aruba is the 'A' in 'ABC' for "Aruba - Bonaire - Curacao".
