Montserrat, "Emerald Jewel of the Caribbean", is a small Caribbean island of about 40 square miles. Monserrat is southeast of Puerto Rico, south of St. Kitts & Nevis, and southwest of Antigua. Soufriere Hills Volcano which is in the southeast corner of the island has had recent volcanic activity over the past few years. There is an exclusion zone to restrict travel to this part of the island. There are three mountain ranges formed around three volcanic centers on the island. Volcanic activity has caused much of the population to emigrate off the island. Saint Anthony, Saint Georges, and Saint Peter are the parishes of this The beaches of Montserrat are on the Caribbean side of the island. These Montserrat beaches include Bunkum Bay, Carr's Bay, Fox's Bay, Isles Bay, Lime Kiln beach, Little Bay Beach, Old Road Bay, Rondezvous (Rendezvous) Bay Beach, Sugar Bay, and Woodlands beach. Rondezvous Bay Beach is the only beach on the island with white sand. All the other beaches have darker sand due to the volcanic activity.
