The nation of St. Kitts and Nevis consists of two volcanic beautiful islands in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. A two-mile wide channel called the Narrows separates St. Kitts to the north and Nevis to the south. St. Kitts, the larger of the two, is officially known as St. Christopher, being named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. The island of Nevis is named from the Spanish word 'nieves' since the clouds on the volcanic peak on Nevis reminded Christopher Columbus of snow. Beach areas in St. Kitts and Nevis include Banana Bay, Basseterre Beach, Belle Tete, Canoe Bay, Cockleshell Bay, Conaree Beach, Dieppe Bay Beach, Friar's Bay, Frigate Bay, Half Moon Bay, Helden's Beach, Majors Bay, Mosquito Bay, Pump Bay, Sand Bank Bay, Turtle Bay, White House Bay, to name a few. The coastline of the two islands are covered with beautiful beaches, rocks, and boulders. The color of the sand varies from white to golden (from the coral) to gray or black (volcanic activity). The waves of the Atlantic Ocean are found on the eastern side of the two islands.
