The island of St. Lucia is in the Caribbean as part of the Windward Islands, runs north-south, and has almost 100 miles of coastline. St. Lucia is to the north of St. Vincent and to the south of Martinique. To the west of the island is the Caribbean and to the east is the North Atlantic Ocean. St. Lucia Channel is to the north and St. Vincent Passage is to the south. The island was not formed like many islands in the Caribbean with plenty of limestone and sand but was formed from volcanic activity and still has boiling mud that emits sulfur in some places. Gros Piton and Petit Piton are famous twin volcanic peaks on the island. Cap Point is at the northern end of St. Lucia. Cape Marquis is to the southeast of Cape Point. The Maria Islands are just east of the southern tip of St. Lucia. To the west of Cape Point is Pigeon Island, Rodney Bay, and Choc Beach. All beaches on St. Lucia are open to the public.
