The Caribbean is a beautiful sea located between the Gulf of Mexico, the North Atlantic, Central America, and South America. The Caribbean is full of beautiful islands, people, and beaches. The islands in the Caribbean are very popular with tourists and the cruise ship industry. The islands of the Caribbean have the following groupings:
The Greater Antilles in the Caribbean stretch along the northern edge of the Caribbean. Except for the Cayman Islands which is surrounded entirely by the Caribbean, the islands have the Gulf of Mexico on their northern shores and the Caribbean on their southern shores. The beautiful islands of the Greater Antilles include Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.
The Lesser Antilles are made up of the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Leeward Antilles, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Leeward Islands are the northern half of the chain of beautiful beach islands of the Lesser Antilles. Their eastern shores face the North Atlantic Ocean while their western shores are on the Caribbean. While some are flat and have their origins with coral, many are volcanic in origin. The prevailing winds in the Leeward Islands are predominantly northerly. The Leeward Islands include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Saba, St. Barts, St. Eusatatius, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Martin, and the US Virgin Islands including St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas.
The Windward Islands are the southern islands of the Lesser Antilles. The majority of these islands are volcanic in origin. The Windward Islands are made up of Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Leeward Antilles are made up of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, and a Venezuelan archipelago.
The Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Bahamas together make up the West Indies.
The Bahamas and Bermuda are in the Atlantic Ocean.
